Towards a Tobacco-Free Future: Awareness and Action for NSS Volunteers

On September 12, 2024, the National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit No.160 volunteers attended an informative lecture on Tobacco Abuse, delivered by Dr. S. Nagaraj, the NSS Programme Officer-UnitNo.160. The event aimed to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco use and equip volunteers with knowledge to advocate for healthier lifestyles.

The session began with an introduction highlighting the alarming statistics surrounding tobacco consumption and its impact on health. He emphasized the critical need for awareness, particularly among youth, who are often targeted by tobacco marketing.

In his presentation, Dr. Nagaraj outlined the various forms of tobacco, including smoking and smokeless options, and detailed their detrimental health effects, such as respiratory diseases, heart conditions and cancer. He also discussed the psychological and social factors contributing to tobacco addiction.

Following the lecture, Dr. Nagaraj facilitated a discussion on prevention strategies and the importance of community engagement in combating tobacco use. He encouraged NSS volunteers to actively spread awareness and support anti-tobacco initiatives within their communities.
