Faculty Retraining Program on “Academic Integrity and Research Ethics”

A One day Faculty Retraining Program on “ Academic Integrity and Research Ethics “ was organized by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC)  in association with the Research Forum of Sri S.Ramasamy Naidu Memorial College, Sattur -626203 on 31.08.2024(forenoon).The faculty retraining program focused on “Academic Integrity and Research Ethics”, was conducted by the distinguished academician  Emeritus Professor  Dr A. Joseph Dorairaj, Former Senior Professor and VC i/c, School of English and Foreign Languages, Gandhigram Rural Institute (Deemed to be University), Gandhigram.

The Retraining program was attended by a diverse group of faculty members from various departments, aimed to enhance the understanding and application of academic integrity and research ethics within the institution.

Dr.Joseph  Dorairaj, a seasoned scholar, an eminent Professor and an authority in the field, provided invaluable insights into the principles that underpin the ethical  , academic conduct and ethical research practices.The program began with the prayer song, sung by Dr A.Padmashini and Dr Thilagam.

The welcome address was delivered by Dr A.Rajeshkanna, IQAC Coordinator, Sri S.Ramasamy Naidu Memorial College, Sattur.

The presidential address was delivered by the Principal Dr.P.Rajaguru who emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards of academic integrity in research and teaching.

The objectives of the retraining program were outlined as follows:

To equip faculty with strategies to prevent and address academic misconduct.

To reinforce the understanding of academic integrity among faculty members.

To discuss the principles of research ethics and their practical application.

To explore the challenges and dilemmas faced in upholding the principles in contemporary research.

Dr. Joseph Dorairaj opened the session with a comprehensive presentation on the core values of academic integrity and responsibility.He highlighted how these values are essential for fostering a culture of academic excellence and credibility. A significant portion of the session was dedicated to research ethics, where Dr. Dorairaj explored the ethical considerations that must be observed throughout the research process. Dr. Dorairaj’s engaging presentation style, coupled with real-life examples and case studies, made the complex subject matter accessible and relatable. He emphasized more on how to avoid unfair academic activities that prevail within the institution in the first phase of his oration. In the second phase of his deliverence, he discussed more on logical reasoning in the research ethics that clearly projected the unethical behaviour of the academicians.

In the third phase of his speech he illustrated that research misconduct prevails within India. In the concluding part of his deliverance, he gave the detailed map for how to nurture and pursue a genuine research. He encouraged interactive discussions, allowing faculty members to share their experiences and concerns related to academic integrity and research ethics. This interactive approach helped to deepen the participants’ understanding and provided practical insights into how they would uphold these standards in their research. The one-day faculty retraining program on “Academic Integrity and Research Ethics” by Dr. Joseph Dorairaj was a astounding success. It provided the participants with crystal clear understanding of the ethical challenges and responsibilities they faced in their academic roles. The knowledge gained from the program will undoubtedly contribute to foster a culture of integrity and ethical scholarship at our Institution. Dr. Dorairaj’s expertise and the interactive format of the program were highly appreciated by all attendees, who left with a renewed commitment to uphold the highest standards of academic and research ethics.
