Sri S. Ramasamy Naidu Memorial College celebrated the festival of Pongal with great fervour and enthusiasm, transforming the campus into a hub of cultural vibrancy. The event aimed to preserve Tamil Nadu’s rich agrarian heritage and provide students with a platform to immerse themselves in traditional festivities. The celebrations, marked by colourful decorations, cultural performances and traditional games, showcased the collective spirit and creativity of students and faculty alike.

The preparations for the event began days in advance, with each department enthusiastically taking charge of decorating their respective spaces. The decorations reflected the essence of Pongal, with vibrant kolams (rangoli) adorning the floors, sugarcane and turmeric plants symbolising prosperity and earthen pots representing tradition.

Students, dressed in ethnic attire, prepared Pongal, the signature dish of the festival, in beautifully decorated pots. The aroma of the freshly cooked delicacy added to the festive atmosphere and brought everyone together to celebrate gratitude towards nature and farmers.

A series of cultural performances followed, enthralling the audience with their energy and creativity. Students presented traditional dances and Tamil folk dances, which captured the spirit of the harvest season. The cultural events not only entertained but also educated the students about the deep cultural roots of Pongal.

To revive the traditional spirit, a variety of traditional games were organised, fostering enthusiasm and teamwork among students. Games like Uriyadi (pot breaking) and tug of war drew widespread participation. These games and activities served to engage students in the rich traditions of Tamil Nadu, creating a lively and interactive environment.

The celebrations were further enhanced by the collaborative efforts of students and faculty members under the guidance of the Principal Dr P. Rajaguru. While students took the lead in organising and participating in the events, faculty members offered guidance and support, ensuring the seamless execution of the programme. The active participation of teaching and non-teaching staff contributed to the festive spirit and strengthened the sense of community within the college.

The Pongal celebration concluded with a shared meal where students, faculty, and staff came together to enjoy the delicacies prepared during the event. This moment symbolised harmony and gratitude, encapsulating the essence of the festival. The celebration left a lasting impact, fostering cultural consciousness among students and providing them with a sense of pride in their heritage. The Pongal celebration at Sri S. Ramasamy Naidu Memorial College was a grand success, reflecting the vibrant traditions and collective spirit of the institution. The event not only preserved cultural values but also strengthened bonds among the college community, making it a memorable and meaningful occasion. It stood as a testament to the college’s commitment to holistic education that goes beyond academics to nurture cultural and social values.
