On August 14, 2024, the Department of History commemorated “Partition Horrors Remembrance Day,” paying tribute to the countless victims of the 1947 partition of India. The event featured a Digital Exhibition and a documentary screening that poignantly illustrated the immense struggles and suffering endured during that tragic period. These presentations highlighted the widespread agony of the partition, focusing on the human cost and the profound impact on those who lived through it.

Dr S. Nagaraj and Mr S. Arunkumar delivered insightful reflections on the traumatic episode, shedding light on the pervasive gendered violence that characterised the partition. Their perspectives added depth to the understanding of this historical event, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging the often-overlooked experiences of women during this time of upheaval.

The event was a poignant reminder of the necessity of remembering and learning from history. By providing a platform for the younger generation to engage with the complexities and uncertainties of the partition, the commemoration underscored the significance of historical awareness in fostering a more informed and empathetic society.
