The second-year M.Sc. Chemistry students eagerly participated in a complimentary educational visit to the research facilities at the International Research Centre, Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education, Krishnankoil.
The complimentary educational visit to the research facilities was organized as part of the International Conference on Next Generation Materials and Devices, held from 01.08.2024 to 03.08.2024. This event was hosted by the Department of Physics, School of Advanced Sciences, Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education.
On August 2, 2024 (Friday), Dr. S. Saravanan, Assistant Professor of Chemistry ( SRI SRNMC) accompanied 11 second-year M.Sc. Chemistry students on their educational visit to the International Research Centre at Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education. The complimentary educational visit consists of three lectures and instrumental demonstration sessions. They demonstrate five instruments namely XRD, FTIR, SEM, AAS and UV.

The program commenced with an online presentation on “Gadolinium oxide Nanoparticles for Solar Cell Applications” followed by an offline presentation on ” Energy Storage Materials for Supercapacitor Applications” and “Dye Sensitized Solar Cell Applications”. Following the presentations, the students were given a tour of the research facilities at the International Research Centre.
Technical Session of Analysis of XRD
The students explored the technological and practical aspects of the X-Ray Diffractometer installed at the facility and engaged with curiosity, asking detailed questions
about the instrument.
Technical Session of Analysis of SEM
The students received a demonstration of the Scanning Electron Microscope, which
uses electron beams to magnify atoms. They observed how to obtain micrographs of samples
and measure particle sizes using the instrument.
Technical Session of Analysis of FTIR
Next, the students were learnt the making of sample for the FTIR analysis. and how to extract data using the instrument through a live demonstration.
Technical Session of Analysis of AAS
The Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy was introduced to the students, who received a thorough demonstration and explanation of its operation. The students eagerly inquired about the instrument, and the staff provided detailed clarifications.
UV-Spectroscopy
Finally, the students were introduced to UV-Spectroscopy, with a comprehensive demonstration and explanation provided. The students showed great interest, asking numerous questions about the instrument, and the staff offered detailed clarifications.
Overall, the educational visit to the International Research Centre at Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education was highly informative for the students, providing valuable insights into the research facilities near our college. The students were introduced to five advanced and costly instruments, which will significantly benefit their studies
