The Committee of Extension Activities of Sri S. Ramasamy Naidu Memorial College, in collaboration with the Department of Public Health & Disease Prevention, Sattur Block, Sivakasi District, proudly hosted an enlightening event in observance of World Breastfeeding Week. This event, held on the college premises, was designed to educate and inspire female students about the importance of breastfeeding and mental health, aiming to foster a deeper understanding of these crucial aspects of health and well-being.


The programme was presided over by Dr. P. Rajaguru, the Principal of Sri S. Ramasamy Naidu Memorial College, who highlighted the significance of the discussions planned for the day. Dr. Rajaguru’s opening remarks underscored the commitment of the college to addressing key health issues and empowering students with essential knowledge.

The event commenced with an introductory address by Dr. Thanisulas from the Government Medical College Hospital, Virudhunagar. Dr. Thanisulas provided a comprehensive overview of the theme of the event, setting a meaningful context for the subsequent sessions. His introduction emphasised the importance of breastfeeding, not only as a vital practice for infant health but also as a cornerstone of public health initiatives.

The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Yosathamani, the District Health Officer of Virudhunagar. Titled “Awareness Related to Breastfeeding,” Dr. Yosathamani’s talk provided valuable insights into the numerous benefits of breastfeeding. He discussed its critical role in promoting infant health, enhancing immune function and fostering mother-child bonding. Dr. Yosathamani also addressed common misconceptions about breastfeeding, offering evidence-based information to dispel myths and encourage informed practices among new mothers.

The programme was further enriched by presentations from distinguished professionals in the field of mental health. Dr. Jeevarekha, a psychologist and Dr. Vidhu Praba, a psychiatrist from the District Mental Health Program (DMHP) in Virudhunagar, delivered insightful discussions on “Drug Abuse and Mental Health.” Their sessions were designed to enhance the students’ understanding of mental health challenges and the impact of substance abuse. They provided practical guidance on maintaining mental well-being, recognising early signs of mental health issues and seeking appropriate help.

Dr. Jeevarekha’s presentation focused on the psychological aspects of mental health, emphasising the importance of mental resilience and the role of a supportive environment in fostering mental well-being. Dr. Vidhu Praba elaborated on the clinical perspective, discussing the interplay between drug abuse and mental health disorders and the importance of integrated treatment approaches.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Rajkumar, Block Medical Officer of Sattur. Dr. Rajkumar expressed his gratitude to all the speakers and participants for their valuable contributions. He acknowledged the efforts of the Committee of Extension Activities and the Department of Public Health & Disease Prevention in organising such a significant event. Dr. Rajkumar’s closing remarks reiterated the importance of continuous education and awareness in promoting public health and mental well-being.
